Petropavlovsk, 1741. An expedition sponsored by the Tsar sets out on the road to northern Siberia to find a safe sea route between Russia and North America. On board one of the ships is Laurentz Waxell, a boy who, at only 12 years of age, will be forever marked by the horror experienced in those cold and inhospitable regions.
